Morgan Hand Mill settings; Rod Action Measures. These measures are somewhat experimental. They may be useful for comparing rod tapers. Measurements from Garrison Stress Curves. These describe the distribution of stress values across the length of the rod. The first 10 inches (25cm) of the tip is ignored, and the remainder of the action length ...
I use a Tom Morgan hand mill, another great invention, and the beveller lends itself quite well to it. I take the cane down to a predetermined mark on the beveller and then transfer it to the hand mill for the last hundreds of an inch or so. It works great. All of this and it's half the price of any of its competitors. Thanks for the beveller.

All TMR bamboo rods are built on the Morgan Hand Mill using Tom's tapers as the foundation. He believed in starting with the finest tip possible and having a smooth progressive taper for the full length of the rod. Our rods load deeply for increased feel and accuracy, but also recover quickly to provide plenty of power on longer casts. ...
morgan handmill. by ActionJack » 05/16/07 20:00. For me a straight strip is straight, I know I am far from being a pro at straightening but have had no problems using my strips in the MHM. I was told by the guys at Bellenger that the strips had to be really straight and the enamel flat in a power beveller.
The plane is specially designed to utilize my ideas for hand milling bamboo strips. in a manner similar to a milling machine only it is operated by hand. The "Deluxe Hand Grain Mill" (VKP1024) has a decent size hopper, an adjustable knob for coarse-to-fine grind, replaceable milling cone, and table clamp. This one is a step above being "entry level". Although I don't own this model, people seem to like it. Probably just fine for occasional use.

Anyway, I've been hand-planing rods for several years and have looked for a used MHM, due to the cost (this is truly a HOBBY for me). I ran across a used one and purchased it. I think I have everything I need and I have even talked with Tom Morgan (GREAT Guy!!!), but I am still confused with the mill.
When I first began with my Morgan Hand Mill, I dropped the cutters down 0.002" for each cut and often noticed that one side cut more than the other. For a time I fooled around with the position of the hold-down nose piece, but even that did not produce consistent results. Then, and ever since, I switched to dropping the cutters down 0.004" …
So from six 1" wide sections it yields twelve .300 +- wide STRAIGHT strips ready for the Hand Planers Friend to rough bevel ready for heat treatment. I use a Harry Boyd heat gun oven with the aluminum fixtures. The next process is to Flatten the enamel using a fixture I developed on my Morgan Hand Mill.
Ordinarily the screw could continue opening the split rendering it useless but with the STRIP GRIP the more you tighten the screw because of the pressure created on the sides of the slope, the more the split tightens up and corrects itself. The steel one shown here measures 1/2" x 1/2" x 1 1/2" and the grove is 1/4" deep, but 5/16th would be ...
The versatile Morgan Hand Mill (MHM). Let me tell you some interesting things that the MHM can do for you. You can make Hex, Quad, or Penta rods. You can make them all with a swelled butt from minor to major and you can hollow the butt and/or tips too. You can take any standard taper and add to it a swelled butt.

The MHM requires that a hole be drilled in each strip (prior to roughing or tapering on the MHM) to accommodate the screw holding the strip in place. The MHM manual shows that this hole should be drilled on the flat butt end of each strip. Using the Little Giant Rougher, the strips are fed entirely through the machine, resulting in strips …

6. The bed of the mill, the anvil, clearance between plane and bed, precision in the butterhead is good but can in theory have som impact 7. the cylindrical gauge delivered with the hand mill was far away from round. My recommendation get a gauge pin in the correct dimension and make the setting and you will have a home run! 8.
Rule #1 has to do with safety. My wife and kids know, if they hear a machine running to wait until it's off before trying to get my attention. Jumping or being startled while you're running a lathe or table saw can …
I use a Morgan Hand Mill to plane my strips and hollowing with Winston-style fluting with it is easy, very precise, and quick, so that is the type of hollowing I do. Tapering the hollowing is also easy with the MHM as is hollowing out to the end of the tip section. My hollowing at the very tip is modest.

Re: Tom Morgan Hand Mill. I think considering buying a MHM as your base system is very valid, I think the "all at once" price scares a few people away but in the end the value is there. If you are a fully equipped rod maker and want to make quads, quad planing forms make the most sense. Yes, quad making is more unforgiving but who …
