Probably because the 2.20 ratio creates lower forces compared to M20 2.52 and M22Z 2.98 and also the shallow helix angle compared to M20 distribute the forces more evenly into the case which makes it hold up fine. At least this applies to use case of street tires on the street. Slicks on tracks might turn out different.

The first time I heard the term "rock crusher" was in reference to the transmission in the 1967 L88 Corvette. Due to the low gear angle there is a fair amount of gear noise, really like a medium / heavy duty truck transmission. True enough the M22 did trickle out the door in 1965-67 and was buried in the option lists.

In my opinion the super T10 is stronger than a wide ratio muncie weaker than a close ratio non m22 muncie definitely weaker than a m22 but a good box for decent power heavy street car without a ton of power. The 2.20 low gear is just not low enough. If you want a 4 speed, get a Muncie M20 with a 2.52 low gear ratio.
